YOU DON’T HAVE TO HAVE IT ALL FIGURED OUT AND THATS NORMAL

We live in a world where everyone seems to have their lives perfectly planned out. You scroll through Instagram and see people landing dream internships, acing their classes, and looking like they have it all together. And then there’s you — feeling unsure about what major to choose, what career path to take, or whether you’re even on the “right” path in life.

The truth? You don’t have to have everything figured out — and honestly, no one really does.

The Pressure to Have It All Together

I get it. High school graduation is this huge milestone, and suddenly, everyone expects you to have a plan. As soon as you get to college, you’re asked, “So, what’s your major?” And it feels like you’re supposed to have a clear answer. But for many of us, that answer isn’t easy. Some people arrive in college with a very specific idea of what they want to do, but others (like me!) are still figuring it out.

There’s a lot of pressure to pick a career, follow a path, and stick to it. But what if I told you that the uncertainty, the confusion, and the searching are all part of the process? They’re not something to be ashamed of — they’re a normal part of growing, learning, and discovering who you are.

You’re Not Alone

Let’s get this out of the way: you are not alone. In fact, it’s completely normal to be uncertain, especially when you’re in the middle of such a big transition like college. According to a study by the American Council on Education, nearly 80% of students change their major at least once during their college careers. Think about that: 80%! If you’re not sure what you want to study or what your future career should be, you’re in good company.

It’s okay to not know exactly what you want to do right now. College is a time for exploration, self-discovery, and figuring things out. And here’s the best part: you don’t need to rush it.

Your Path Isn’t a Straight Line

One of the things I’ve learned in my own college journey is that the path is rarely linear. I’ve changed my mind about majors more times than I can count, and I’ve had moments of serious doubt. But that’s okay. In fact, it’s normal. Some people go through college without changing their major at all, but for others, it’s a process of trial and error. And guess what? Both are totally valid.

The best part is, you’ll likely change as you go. Your interests will evolve, and your passions will become clearer the more you dive into different subjects and activities. What you love today might not be what you love tomorrow — and that’s perfectly fine. Embrace the journey.

It’s All About the Exploration

If you don’t know what you want to do yet, college is the perfect place to explore. Take a variety of classes. Join clubs that interest you, even if you’re not sure you’ll stick with them. Take on internships or volunteer opportunities that allow you to test the waters in different fields.

I know it sounds cliché, but some of the most valuable moments of my own journey have been the ones where I let myself just explore. I took a philosophy class on a whim and ended up falling in love with critical thinking. I joined a writing group and discovered a passion for creative writing. I took a job in the campus marketing department and realized I had a knack for digital content creation. None of these things happened because I had everything figured out from the start — they happened because I was open to the process and gave myself permission to explore different possibilities.

It’s Okay to Change Your Mind

If you find yourself halfway through a semester and realize that your major isn’t what you thought it would be, don’t panic. Changing your mind doesn’t mean you’ve failed. It just means you’re learning more about yourself and your interests. You’re gaining experience that will help shape your future, even if it’s not a straight path.

Remember, college is a time of growth. You’re constantly evolving, and that includes your interests, skills, and values. So if you change your major, your career goals, or your life direction, that’s just part of the process. There’s no one “right” way to go through college, and there’s no single destination you need to reach.

Take a Breath — You Have Time

It’s easy to feel like the clock is ticking, especially when you see other people moving forward in ways that seem more organized. But trust me: you have time. College is not a race, and the decisions you make now don’t have to be final. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to pivot, re-evaluate, and find your true calling.

Take a deep breath, embrace the uncertainty, and know that you are right where you need to be. The path to your future is not a straight line, and that’s okay.

Final Thoughts: The Journey Is the Destination

So, if you’re feeling pressure to have everything figured out, just know that you’re not alone. Everyone’s journey is different, and it’s okay to not have it all figured out. College is about discovering who you are, what excites you, and what drives you — and that takes time.

As long as you stay open to new experiences and trust yourself along the way, you’ll find your direction eventually. The uncertainty isn’t something to fear; it’s something to embrace. Who you are today is not who you will be tomorrow, and that’s part of the beauty of it all.

So take a deep breath and remind yourself: You don’t have to have it all figured out. And that’s perfectly normal.
