COMMON APP ESSAY PROMPTS: BREAKING THEM DOWN 2025-2026

The Common App personal statement is your chance to speak directly to admissions officers—beyond grades and test scores. But with seven prompts to choose from, it can be tough to know where to start.

Don’t worry—I’m breaking each prompt down, so you can find one that sparks a story worth telling.

🎯 First, a Quick Note:

  • You only need to choose one prompt.
  • The essay has a 650-word limit.
  • The goal: reveal who you are, not just what you’ve done.

🧠 Prompt 1: “Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it.”

What it’s really asking:
What’s something deeply personal or defining about you?

Good for:

  • A long-term passion or talent
  • Identity-related experiences

What it’s really asking:
Tell us about a turning point.

Good for:

  • First jobs, leadership experiences, or challenges that changed your mindset
  • Times you became more independent or empathetic

Tips:

  • It doesn’t have to be dramatic. A small moment with big insight can be powerful.

📚 Prompt 6: “Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time.”

What it’s really asking:
What excites you intellectually or creatively?

  • Projects or creative work that light you up

Tips:

  • Show how your curiosity drives you—and where it might lead in college or life.

🆓 Prompt 7: “Share an essay on any topic of your choice.”

What it’s really asking:
Do you have a story that doesn’t fit the other prompts—but still reveals who you are?

Good for:

  • Unconventional experiences
  • Cross-topic essays
  • Personal statements already written for other uses (e.g., scholarships)

Tips:

  • Make sure it still has a clear theme and reflects personal growth or identity.

🔚 Final Thoughts: How to Choose Your Prompt

Ask yourself:

  • What story do I keep coming back to?
  • What experience helped me grow?
  • What do I want colleges to understand about me?

Remember: the best prompt is the one that helps you tell your best story.
