HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR SUMMER BEFORE SENIOR YEAR

Summer before senior year is more than just sunshine and sleep-ins—it’s a golden opportunity to get ahead, reflect on your goals, and position yourself for a successful college application season. Whether you’re aiming for the Ivy League, a state school, or something in between, this summer can be a game-changer. Here’s how to make the most of it:

1. Get Clear on Your College List

Now’s the time to research colleges, take virtual or in-person tours, and create a list of reach, match, and safety schools. Think beyond name recognition—consider factors like location, size, campus culture, majors, and financial aid.

Tip: Use tools like BigFuture by College Board or Niche to filter by your preferences.

2. Start Your Common App Essay

The Common App essay prompts are already available—and your future self will thank you for getting a head start! Use the slower pace of summer to brainstorm, draft, and revise without the pressure of homework or extracurriculars.

Tip: Write a story only you could tell. The best essays reveal your personality, not just your achievements.

3. Pursue a Passion Project

Whether it’s coding an app, launching a blog, tutoring younger students, or starting a backyard vegetable garden, a summer passion project shows initiative and creativity—two things colleges love.

Tip: Document your journey with photos or journaling. It could become part of your application!

4. Work or Volunteer

A summer job or volunteer gig teaches responsibility, time management, and teamwork. Bonus: it gives you real-world experience and something meaningful to mention on applications and in interviews.

Tip: Look for opportunities related to your future major or interests. Want to study health sciences? Volunteer at a hospital. Interested in business? Try a retail job or start a small side hustle.

5. Prep for Standardized Tests

If you’re taking the SAT or ACT, now’s the time to study. Even 20–30 minutes a day can make a big difference. Consider free resources like Khan Academy or your local library.

Tip: If you’re applying to test-optional schools, decide whether submitting scores will help your application.

6. Polish Your Resume & Activities List

Create or update your resume and write down all of your activities, leadership roles, awards, and service work. You’ll need this info when filling out applications—and it’s easy to forget the little things later!

7. Relax, Reflect & Recharge

Don’t forget to take time for yourself. Senior year will be busy, and a little mental rest now can help you show up your best when it matters most.

Tip: Journal your hopes and fears about the year ahead. It’s a great way to track your growth—and calm your nerves.

Bottom Line:
You don’t need to do everything this summer but doing something can make a huge difference. Whether you spend it preparing, working, or simply discovering more about who you are—your future self (and your future college!) will thank you.
