Sharing a room in college can be one of the most exciting—and sometimes most challenging—parts of freshman year. For many students, it’s the first time living with someone outside of their family. A little effort early on can go a long way in creating a respectful and even fun living situation.
Here are some roommate basics every student should know:
1. Start with an Honest Conversation
On move-in day, take time to sit down and talk. Cover the basics:
- Sleep schedules
- Study habits
- Cleaning responsibilities
- Guests and overnight visitors
Getting expectations out in the open early helps prevent misunderstandings later.
2. Respect Personal Space
Even in a tiny dorm room, everyone needs some privacy. Knock before entering, ask before borrowing, and be mindful of noise. Small courtesies build big trust.
3. Set Clear Boundaries
It’s okay to say, “I’d rather not share clothes” or “I need quiet after midnight.” Boundaries aren’t about being difficult—they’re about helping both roommates feel comfortable.
4. Create a Cleaning Plan
No one wants to be the only one taking out the trash or wiping down the bathroom sink. A simple rotating schedule can prevent resentment from building.
5. Address Issues Quickly (and Kindly)
If something bothers you, bring it up respectfully instead of letting it simmer. A calm conversation is almost always better than passive-aggressive notes.
6. Find Common Ground
Even if you’re very different, try to find at least one activity you can share—grabbing coffee, watching a show, or going to a campus event. A little bonding makes living together smoother.
Bottom line: Roommate success comes down to respect, communication, and compromise. You don’t have to be best friends with your roommate—but you do need to create a space where both of you feel comfortable and supported.
