FAFSA 101: HOW TO CREATE YOUR ACCOUNT

Paying for college starts with one important step: completing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA opens the door to federal grants, scholarships, work-study, and low-interest student loans. But before you can apply, you’ll need to create your FAFSA account (FSA ID) at www.studentaid.gov.

Why You Need an FSA ID

Your FSA ID is your secure username and password. You’ll use it to:

  • Log in to complete and submit the FAFSA
  • Sign your FAFSA electronically
  • Access and manage your federal student aid information

Both students and parents (for dependent students) will need their own separate FSA IDs.

Steps to Create Your FAFSA Account

  1. Go to www.studentaid.gov.
  2. Click “Create Account.”
  3. Enter your personal information:
    • Full legal name
    • Date of birth
    • Social Security Number (SSN)
    • Email and mobile phone number
  4. Create your username and password.
  5. Confirm your email and phone number (you’ll need access to both).
  6. Save your login details somewhere safe—you’ll use them every year.

Pro Tips for Success

Start Early – Create your account before FAFSA opens (October 1) to save time.
Use Your Own Email/Phone – Students and parents should not share the same contact info.
Keep It Secure – Don’t share your FSA ID. It’s your electronic signature.

Bottom Line

Your FAFSA account is the first step in unlocking financial aid for college. Take 10 minutes to create your FSA ID today and be ready to file as soon as the FAFSA opens!
