DECEMBER COLLEGE CHECKLIST: WHAT JUNIORS &SENIORS SHOULD BE DOING RIGHT NOW

December is a busy month—between holidays, exams, and family events, college prep can easily slip to the bottom of the list. But a little planning now can make January feel easier and help students stay on track for their goals.

Here’s a simple, stress-reducing checklist for high school juniors and seniors to tackle this month.

🎓 For Seniors: Finish Strong Before Deadlines Hit

1. Finalize Any Remaining College Applications

Regular Decision deadlines are around the corner. Seniors should:

  • Review essays for clarity and authenticity
  • Update activity lists and resumes
  • Double-check recommendation letters
  • Confirm deadlines for each school

This is the last push—encourage them to focus and finish with confidence.

2. Submit the FAFSA if you have not already

  • Create FSA IDs for both parent and student
  • Gather financial documents
  • Review scholarship requirements

Getting organized now helps avoid the January rush.

3. Apply for Winter & January Scholarships

Many national and local scholarships close between December–January. Students should aim to submit at least 3–5.

4. Send Updated Test Scores (If Needed)

If the student took late-fall ACT/SAT exams, ensure the scores reach colleges before deadlines.

5. Write Thank-You Notes

Teachers, counselors, and mentors appreciate a thoughtful thank-you. It’s a small action that goes a long way.

📘 For Juniors: Lay the Foundation for a Strong Application Year

1. Register for Spring SAT or ACT

Test dates fill quickly. December is the time to secure a spring spot—especially if the student hopes to finish testing by early summer.

2. Start a Simple Activities Résumé

Juniors don’t need a perfect résumé yet, just a clear place to track:

  • Clubs and leadership roles
  • Volunteer experience
  • Work hours
  • Awards or achievements

This will save hours during senior-year applications.

3. Plan Winter Break College Visits

Campus tours are quieter during the holidays, but still available. Visiting a few colleges now helps juniors start identifying what they want—big or small, near or far, campus feel, major options, and more.

4. Explore Majors and Career Interests

Juniors can use winter break to reflect on:

  • What subjects they enjoy
  • Strengths and interests
  • Possible majors or career paths

They don’t need to decide anything yet—just start the exploration.

5. Set Up a Scholarship Tracking Sheet

Many scholarships are available to juniors, especially local community awards. A simple spreadsheet helps keep deadlines organized.

Encouragement for Parents

December is naturally hectic. Students don’t need to do everything perfectly—they just need to keep moving forward. A calm plan, a positive mindset, and steady progress make all the difference.

With a little organization now, the new year will begin with confidence and clarity.
